History of Lucas

Lucas Texas, much like surrounding areas, was first settled in the early 1840s by pioneers from Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. One of the first settlers was Peter F. Lucas. The town was named for his son Gabriel Lucas who opened the first general store. As a result of not having a railroad passing through it, being so far out of the way of Dallas and being made up of predominantly farmers who grew cotton and corn, Lucas had a uneventful history and little growth its first hundred years.

By 1947 the town only had about a 100 residence but as Dallas grew and US highway 75 was improved Lucas began to see more growth. Lucas was incorporated in 1970 and its population had boomed to around 1,500 by 1980. With more and more residence moving from Dallas, Lucas grew steadily to 2,205 by 1990 and 2,890 at the turn of the century. In 2005 Lucas hit the 5,000 resident mark and was able to adopt a home rule charter. However in an effort to protect the social fabric of their city Lucas residence did not approve a charter until May of 2008.
