McKinneyMcKinney City Hall InformationMcKinney, one of the oldest and most historic towns in North Texas, was first settled in 1841 by pioneers from Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. The city, and the county it is in, was named for Collin McKinney who served as a guide for settlers new to the area and was one of the men who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. The town was first incorporated in 1849 but was later re-incorporated on May 28, 1859. The city grew through the years with the railroad arriving in 1872, followed by the first city hall being built in ten years later. The town began enjoying electric lights in 1889 and a second city hall building was built in 1909. The central location within the county aided the town's main purposes, to serve as the county seat and to process the cotton and other crops grown on surrounding farm lands. Currently McKinney is one of the fastest growing cites in America and is second in size only to Plano in Collin County with an estimated 2008 population of 112,000 people. The city also has a strong history of youth and armature athletics. The McKinney soccer league has over 3000 children participate each season. Youth baseball leagues are also wildly popular in the area. The McKinney Baseball Association, McKinney Little League Baseball Inc. and the Mickey Mantle 16 and Under World Series all call McKinney home. |
